The Human mind as a "tabula rasa" The Human mind as a "tabula rasa" It was statesman-philosopher Francis Bacon who, early in the seventeenth century, first strongly established the claims of Empiricism - the reliance on the experience of the senses - over those speculation or deduction in the pursuit of knowledge. John Locke’s blank slate theory, or tabula rasa, expands on an idea suggested by Aristotle in the fourth century B.C. The theory proposes that beyond a very few basic instincts, our experiences shape us entirely. The Tabula Rasa Theory John Locke produced the theory of Tabula rasa. This theory states that whenever a human being is born, he/she is a clean slate. In other words, each person is born without a personality and the development of this personality is based on one's social experiences.

Tabula rasa is a Latin term that can be translated to “blank slate.” It’s a theory that describes our mind as a “blank slate” at birth. This “slate” becomes filled with each new experience. Through all of these experiences, we form thoughts and personality traits. It is widely believed that the philosophical concept of ‘ tabula rasa ’ originates with Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding and refers to a state in which a child is as formless as a blank slate. In his brilliant 1689 work An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Locke argues that, at birth, the mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) that we fill with ‘ideas’ as we experience the world through the five senses. By ‘idea’, Locke means “whatsoever is the Object of the Understanding, when a person thinks.” The concept of Tabula Rasa was first suggested by John Locke, whose primary theory was the belief that a child’s mind was a tabula rasa or “ blank slate ” and therefore assumed a position that was both morally and ethically neutral (UMich, n.d.).
